What Is Inktober?

Inktober is a drawing challenge that happens every October around the world. Every day, you have to create an ink drawing or doodle and share it on social media. That’s ’31 days, 31 drawings’.

Who Came Up With The Idea Of Inktober?

Artist Jake Parker wanted to improve his ink skills and develop good drawing habits – we all know how easy it is to stop drawing! You put down that pencil and before you know it, months have gone by! So, he came up with the idea of doing 1 ink drawing per day for the entire month of October. He then posted each one on Instagram which started the Inktober trend!

What Are The Rules Of Inktober?

The basic rules of Inktober are:

  1. Make a drawing using ink.
  2. Post it online. We recommend Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc…
  3. Make sure you use the hashtags #inktober #inktober2018 with your drawing so that other artists can easily find and see your ink drawings.
  4. Repeat each day throughout October.

The rules are fairly relaxed. After all, art is all about being creative! The main thing is that you draw daily. It’s all about consistency. Try to make good drawing habits. You can ink digitally if you prefer, or it can be a piece of lettering, calligraphy, typography… Or a story or poem. As long as you’re creating a mark, it’s all about unleashing your creativity on a daily basis.

You can use a range or media, including marker pens and watercolours, but keep it simple. After all, you are going to have to create a drawing a day! Try and limit yourself to white paper, black ink and one colour. Simplicity is key!

Inktober 2018 Official Prompt List:

If you’re a bit stuck on what to draw, the last couple of Inktober years has seen a ‘Prompt List’ created by Jake Parker. You can follow the Inktober 2018 Prompt List to spark off your imagination, or you can just create your own thing. If using the Prompt List, it is a good idea to include the relevant hashtag. For example, on day 1 you would use #poisonous. The Official Inktober 2018 Prompt List can be seen below:
