Who Is Behind The Discerning Eye Exhibition 2014?

The Discerning Eye is an educational charity established in 1990.  It was set up to encourage a wider appreciation of the visual arts.  The charity holds an annual exhibition and offers study bursaries to selected artists.  The Discerning Eye Exhibition 2014 is sponsored by ING Commercial Banking.  ING are strong supporters of the visual arts with artwork being displayed in over 900 offices worldwide.

The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2014 differs from other open submission competitions where the artwork is independently selected by six prominent figures of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics.  Work is selected from artists invited by the selectors and from the open submission (25% of their selection must come from the open submission).

This provides a great opportunity for emerging or lesser known artists to have work exhibited alongside work by internationally recognised artists.

Who Are The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2014 Selectors?

This years’ ING Discerning Eye Exhibition selectors are artists Nicola Green and Emma Stibbon RA, collectors Chris Ingram and Dr Giles Brown and art critics Simon Martin and Helen Sumpter.  Simon is the artistic director of Pallant House Gallery and Helen is the senior editor at Arts Review.

The Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary:

The Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary provides an opportunity for artists to extend their practice.  The winning artist receives £1,500 and each runner up will receive £150.
All artists resident in the UK are invited to submit up to three artworks along with a short proposal outlining how the bursary will benefit their art practice.
From this initial stage, up to six artists will be invited to exhibit their work at the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2014.
The 2013 David Gluck Memorial Bursary for drawing went to Fraser Scarfe.
